the diving school Son Bou Scuba

Muriel and Joop have been running the Son Bou Scuba diving school, centrally located in Son Bou on the south coast of Menorca, since April 2004. In 2003, both already worked a season in Menorca. They used this time, to explore Menorca and select the best dive sites.

You will find the diving school in the “Centro Commercial San Jaime” in Son Bou, a short distance from the beach.

Before Menorca, Muriel and Joop worked for 8 years in the Maldives as dive instructors and base leaders. Their years of experience, combined with high safety standards and smooth organization guarantee your stress-free diving vacation. Whether you are a beginner or an “old hand,” you will find that our school, facilities and staff are a perfect choice for your diving adventure. Click here to meet the team.

At Son Bou Scuba, we keep dive groups small and are divided according to experience. This allows every diver to get the most out of his or her dive. No diving partner? No problem! There is always a buddy or divemaster available to guide you. At least 2 land or boat dives are organized daily to the 45 most beautiful dive sites Menorca has to offer.

Safety

Son Bou Scuba has all the necessary permits. We comply with both Spanish and European legislation. Oxygen, communication equipment and First Aid kits are available at the dive center, in the buses and on the boat.

Training

We also offer several PADI specialty courses such as cave diver (cavern), nitrox, deep diving, sidemount diver, self-reliant (solo) diver and Dolphin rebreather diver, to name a few mention. Some specialty courses we offer only in the pre-season (during the months of April, May, June, September & October). The PADI Divemaster course, Assistant Instructor, EFR Instructor and the DAN Oxygen Instructor course are bookable by appointment only.

Diving for children

Our little divers have also been thought of! For children aged 8 to 10, we organize "Bubblemaker" dives every afternoon in the pool (a 2-minute walk from the diving school). From 10 years of age it is possible to make the first dive in the sea, accompanied by an instructor. It is also possible, with 10 years of age to obtain a PADI Junior Scuba Diver or PADI Junior Open Water Diver diving license (assessment to the instructor.) Son Bou Scuba has access to special children's equipment, such as diving suits, regulators and small diving tanks.

'Technical' diving

Are you curious about technical diving? For experienced divers, then, the PADI specialties cavern (cave), sidemount diver, Nitrox, self-reliant (solo) diver and deep diver may be of interest. These courses are a good preparation for those, who are interested in technical diving. Although the above courses are recreational, they are on the border of recreational and technical diving. More info can be found on our pricing page.

For those who enjoy a challenge, Son Bou Scuba offers "Discover Rebreather Diving" dives. After a comprehensive equipment and safety briefing, certified divers can make a test dive in the pool or in the sea with the Dolphin Dräger semi-closed rebreather. We also offer the PADI specialty course "Dolphin semi-closed rebreather. If you already have this certification, you can rent one of our rebreathers.

Family and friends

We feel it is important that non-diving partners and friends also get an impression of why husband/wife or friend enjoy diving so much. Therefore, non-diving partners can join us on our diving trips for a small fee, provided there is room (unfortunately we are not allowed to carry children in child seats). You can then sunbathe or view the underwater world with mask and snorkel. For a trip by boat, snorkeling rates apply.

Equipment

Son Bou Scuba’s diving equipment is brand new. Every three years we replace our complete range of diving suits, regulators and diving tanks. We have fifty 10-, 12- and 15-liter steel bottles, in both DIN and INT versions. For special dives, we have double sets and 5- & 11-liter alu-bottles.

Because our dive sites are breathtaking, the bottles are filled to 210 BAR by three new Bauer compressors with a capacity of 300 liters per minute. Air quality is checked regularly and service performed as prescribed by the manufacturer.

Son Bou Scuba is a dealer of Aqualung, Apeks, Fourth Element, Mares, Polaris and A.P. Diving, among others. We have the following equipment for rent for our divers:
– 20 Apeks DS-4/ATX-40 regulators with ATX-40 octopus and pressure gauge
– 25 Aqualung & Buddy trim vests (from XS to XXXL)
– 10 Aqualung I330R dive computers with color display (suitable for Nitrox and deco)
– 10 Aqualung SEAFLARE led diving lights (1300 lumens)
– 40 x 5.5-mm ‘Aqualung’ diving suits. We have diving suits in almost all sizes, and these can be combined with a shorty, hood and gloves as desired

You can rent complete equipment at Son Bou Scuba for as little as €15 per dive, so why drag along your own?

We rent Canon brand digital underwater cameras, as well as GoPro cameras. If desired, one of our dive guides will film you during your dive so you can relive your diving adventures at home.

The dive center has a large sink to wash your equipment and plenty of space to hang your personal equipment. There is a bathroom in the school with hot shower and changing facilities. In our workshop we can check your diving equipment and make minor repairs. We also service Aqualung and Apeks regulators.

After diving, we like to set up on the terrace in front of the dive center to talk about the dives. To identify the fish we have seen, we have several fish recognition books.

Water temperature

In May, the water of the Mediterranean is still quite fresh at 15 degrees. A 5-mm hooded suit and gloves are then recommended. For those, who get cold easily, a 7-mm suit or dry suit is an alternative, especially if you make two dives.

In June the seawater reaches a temperature of about 22 degrees, in July and August even up to 28 degrees. Then a 3-mm suit without a hood and gloves is sufficient for diving. For the vacation month of your choice, please use the table below:
